FOLLOW ALONG

When this client sat down in my chair, I immediately noticed her ends were green and smelled like chlorine. To add to the complexity of this situation: she was WAY too blonde, with bands of orange/brassiness near her root area, pockets of dark color underneath, and had an overall yellow tone to her hair (plus the green overcast from chlorine). It looked harsh and uncomplimentary with her skin tone.⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ After reviewing photos together and knowing her goals (more of a blended, natural creamy blonde + lots of depth at the root so she could go a long time in between appointments), I knew we had to take the time to do this RIGHT. I can’t put lightener on someone’s ends when there is chlorine on there - I did NOT want to risk chemical damage on her hair.⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ First, I did a @malibucpro treatment to pull out any chlorine/hard water deposits and holy moly - the product was literally turning BLUE GREEN in my hands 🤯⁣ (check out the last picture) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ Then I cut her hair, dried it, and did my color application as I normally would do. Doing the Malibu treatment first + my process in reverse added an hour onto my normal appointment time. I am SO lucky to have had several mentors over the span of my career ✨ I truly believe I am the hairstylist I am today, because of the wisdom + guidance from my mentors.⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ I DO believe that being a successful hairstylist takes a certain degree of “paying your dues” and learning by trial and error. But I also believe that there is SO much knowledge and expertise to be learned from your peers.⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ If I have any advice to someone who’s starting out as a hairstylist (or honestly anyone who feels lost and needs support or direction): Seek out a mentor, and invest energy into that relationship with them. Can you believe my client here goes a YEAR in between highlighting appointments?!⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ We’re able to extend her appointments so far out by placing her highlights several inches away from her scalp, and making sure there is a seamless blend from her natural color into those pops of blonde!⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ Regular haircuts + proper home maintenance is KEY to keeping her highlights looking good over the year to come.⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ I’m only getting my hair highlighted about 2, maybe 3 times a year these days!
